Hello and Happy New Year! I have not posted lately as the holidays have been really busy for us. The last of our house guests left yesterday and now I am scrambling to get back on track for the New Year. I have been busy in the studio even with all the holiday events. The Ivory Gift Shop, inside the Elephant Butte Inn, sold scarves for me this year. It is such a lovely shop and terrific people to work with !! How fortunate I am ! :)...but it did keep me busy creating new silk scarves :)
Pictured above is a guest book I created for the Sierra County Centennial Celebrations...It was a challenge to create something that would travel well (it will be at every centennial event in Sierra County). I started with very elaborate ideas and then scaled them back to this very simple format. The images are on silk ...no surprise there...and the inside pages are archival. I hope it last for 100 years :)
I am also doing more custom work. Such fun to work with clients to create something specific. I guess I have slipped..kicking and screaming into the world of couture...I only say this as the work is specific to the client to their measurements and most of the sewing done by hand. I actually like the idea of the garments being hand made...and I am finally getting the quality I wanted!! Opens a new world to fabric choices and designs...even if it is extremely time consuming.
As some of you may already know, I take care of my elderly mother (95 years young) in the evenings, staying with her at night and then returning to my home, hubby, puppies and studio in the mid-morning. I now how several hours a day to explore hand sewing, knitting, card making etc. This quiet time spent with mom in the evenings and early mornings have proved perfect for experimenting/practicing with different techniques. Mom loves to see what I am creating and I gain new 'expertise'. Such a lovely time for us...
My good friend Linda Sharpling show me that creating hand rolled edges on garments is not really hard just very time consuming and delicate work. It helps teach one the art of Zen...one stitch at a time "LOL" when I am creating the hand rolled edges that is my mantra.....One Stitch At A Time.......this is not production work!! I find the results to be so worth the time and effort. Plus you have a certain 'feeling' when you wear the garment...a feeling of Lightness and Zen....I like it! Sooooo...... for now this is how I have evolved as an artist. Thanks to good friends who take the time to show us the way....
Now off the to studio..Jessica's robe will be cut out and the hand rolled hems started tonight.....such a delightful way to start the new year... Thanks Linda and Tina Sharpling for assisting in the design process and yes, you too L. Caperton LOL girlfriends

Filling the Well 10-2011

Last weekend we took time off to go camping. A short break but such a needed one! I spent some of the time just sitting and studying the effects of light on water. I want to take my meditation panels to the next level with more complex color and design. We know that 'grasshoppers' are learners.....I do my best to always be open to learning from nature, other artists...or any source that presents itself.

We were very lucky to have an east facing camping spot. I simply got up way before sunrise, just sitting and absorbing all that was offered to me..Out of the hundreds of photos I took over the weekend this one is possibly my favorite. I love the muted colors and soft edges.... I am not sure 'how' this time out will connect to my work...but 'filling the well' is a necessary aspect of my connection to my art.

I finished several new pieces just before the mini-vacation. Wish I could share them all with you...so stop by the studio some day...let's have tea and chat...love and light surround you....

The Koi pieces are finished and I have just stretched 6 different sizes of silk for tomorrows play in the studio. Now I am off for a short kayak with my friends...The lake is simply beautiful this afternoon...The photo above is from last month...can you believe how beautiful the water was..?? Just like glass..today looks to be just about as good...:) I will think about the colors for tomorrows pieces and maybe the subject matter...hummm.....where to start and how the layers will be applied. Many times I spend far more time thinking about the process..there is that word again....than I spend doing the actual painting as once the method is thought out...the painting can go quite fast! the only delay being the time each layer needs to completely dry before the next layer of color or wax is applied. Which is the main reason I work on so many pieces at once. As one silk piece is drying I can be working on the next piece and then the next ..keeping the flow of thought and color going as long as possible before I must stop and wait on the silk....It continues to amaze me how each piece still comes out with it's own personality...the color combinations, although from the same thought process, end up so different!! Even the subject matter becomes unique to each piece......ideas from one piece inspiring ideas that are so different for the next piece and so on.....It is my favorite way to work when time and space permit...
For those of you who know me...mom is doing fine...and she is ok with me being a little late coming to stay with her tonight as she knows the kayaking weather will not last long, soon winter cold will be upon us, the kayaking put aside till spring. I am so lucky to have a mom who loves the out of doors and who would actually be out there with us if she felt more secure that she would not fall :( Falling is the major concern with age...broken bones are not fun at any age but at 95...really, really not something one wants to try out!! She has been kayaking and such and now just enjoys her rocking chair...

Exploring the Art of Koi

GOOD SUNDAY MORNING!! The photos above show a small segment of the progression of my latest silk painting. I am Exploring The Art of Painting Koi on Silk...not just the Koi but how to put them under the water....how to use only layers dye and soy wax to create the feeling of looking down through the water. I know I could go somewhere and take a lesson or read about it in a book found somewhere..but for me part of my passion for painting on silk is the unknown. I love to just sit and think about how to go about it...would this or that work..."I wonder if"...it puts such magic in the process...yes, here I go again on the process...but I am in love with the process...not necessarly the finished work...as there is always something that perhaps I could/should do differently ...... I simply love the thinking process and the suprise of what happens...even the pushing myself to 'ruin' a pretty piece by taking a chance and trying one more step...wondering what will happen..Ruin or Wonder...in the lastphoto the piece is 'maybe' finished...it still has all the soy wax protecting the lightest areas and the Koi..so until it is steamed I will not really know what it is going to look like. However, this moring I thought I was finished with it at #4 but wanted to soften the center as with my previous works I felt the contrast was just a little to jarring...this one is now softer...but..will the protected areas play well when they are exposed?? Will the edges of the soy wax and the dye be to harsh...or to soft...We will have to wait and see...but it has been fun working on it and I actually cannnot wait to get this one wrapped and stretch another silk on the frame to see if I can improve ....I know I can in the area of the shapes of the Koi.....I am dissapointed in the koi at the upper right...at a distance it looks ok but up close it looses its something in translation..>>LOL meaning I just did not get it quite right...You see, when I start the Koi it is just color laid down ...then I use soy wax to define the shape...kind of like finding a design in an abstract painting ...it is fun.....and challenging..and not a perfect science as of yet...so back to the studio to try yet again....I think this time I will just put Koi on a long Opera Shawl...focusing on the shape and multi-color of the Koi......until then..love and light surround you...

Swing Jacket 9-11-2011 "JOYFUL"
Featured above is a very special custom Swing Jacket. I am doing my best to accent a mother of the brides dress. Custom work can be quite challenging as we do not live in someone else's head...(actually thank goodness)...so one must truly listen and yet try not to form pre-conceived ideas...it is still so important to go with the flow of the silk, remembering to let the silk become what it wants to become.
Not everyone will purchase a custom work...and that is ok with me...I simply do my best the way I always do...following the good energy of the moment releasing all fear and questions and just 'be in the moment'.

Everyone sees color differently, each client has a very personal concept of how they want to look or feel on that special occasion . It is important to remember that is what custom work is really all about ... how the client feels and what they see when they put on your silk creation. Your client may fall in love or not...so one must ask does the silk creation have good energy?? The very best workmanship and quality I can give? Does it feel delightful when I look at it..mind you..I said 'I look at it'....not someone else... If I answer is yes to all those questions and a client 'rejects' a piece..then I know for a fact that the owner of that piece has not seen it yet...my silk creation is just waiting for it's rightful owner to arrive...I need simply be very Zen and wait..not questioning the work as that is self defeating..but knowing the owner will come along one day...and be delighted that this or that piece is just what they have been looking for...

When I was working on this piece the fear crept in...would the color be right..would the border come out right...if I added another layer of dye would it be ruined...LOL....I mindfully pushed aside those thoughts.....connecting again with the Zen of painting and followed my instinct ....how fun the process was and how delighted I am with the results...This is why I paint on silk...it is the unknown...and taking chances that make this art so delightful...the wonder of dancing with the silk..being fearless and at times intering into the unknown...I wonder what 'this or that' will result in....
Sooooo....Along the way I made a wonderful discovery.....quite by chance....as the client and I had discussed a brown border..but she also told me she loved all shades of blue...I kept thinking of a Sapphire blue...but was still tied to the pre-conceived idea of the brown.....so I wondered if I added a touch of brown to the very bottom border ...how would that look???? hummmm
I could not use my usual golden brown as I would create to much green...but since I use primary colors for the most part...I thought...well..deep turquoise is green..sort of ...and blue...so if I added primary red/magenta...hummm....my thought was it would go black or deep chocolate brown or to the purple side ..thinking of the red and blue...and the funniest thing happened..the dye mixture turned Sapphire blue...yep...just the color that had kept slipping into my mind...sooo000... another edge was added after this photo was taken... using the new Sapphire blue..this silk chose what color it wanted to be...and it is so pretty...even if I say so myself...... If in the end it does not go with My Lady's dress or simply is not what she is thinking of......I will experience the joy of seeing it in the studio..and as with so many of my pieces..it has a magic story to tell...it was a journey and I learned along the way...what could be more perfect than that?? Even as I sit and type this I feel the joy of yesterdays work...and it comes to me...I shall call this piece JOYFUL...

I just love it when a piece comes out the way we imagined...it's not always the case..but with the Santa Fe Ruana I am very pleased. To make it even better...Kitty Leaken took an amazing set of photographs at the Rag Rug Festival. I was delighted to have such wonderful photos of me wearing my most recent creation!

The RRFestival in Santa Fe was simply wonderful. I love seeing so many friends/clients and it is such fun to see ladies try on my creations! It makes all the hours I spend in the studio working alone...trying out new ideas and color combinations...worth while. I paint for myself...colors I like and motifs I relate to..and to see others enjoy the end product...well...woo hoo...I so appreciate the New Mexico Women's Foundation for making this possible!

I took advantage of being so 'far' up north to travel just a bit farther north and visit a good friend in Taos. It was a bitter sweet adventure as part of my trip was to pay my own tribute to Gary Fey...Taos Silk Painter Extraordinaire...who passed over this year. We all have mentors who teach us and touch our hearts...and Gary was one of those for me.... I met Gary several years ago when he was living near Mountair...I saw his work, he shared so much information about framing, technique and philosophy...I will always remember him and his heart...I will do my best to follow in his footsteps by sharing my knowledge in an open and heartfelt way...just as he did with me....love and light Gary....blessings be

The start of a shoji screen....I do love trees....guess it comes from living in the desert where they are precious and few...even the old dead ones speak to me...guess that is why most of my trees have no leaves. When I first started painting a lovely teacher told us that she could tell what part of the country you were from by the type of trees you presented in your art...She was dead on! And with individuals from all over the US.....It made me think of the Lollipop trees I would see in children's art at our schools...well in El Paso every spring people would trim their Mulberry trees down to a nub..and when the leaves came out...they did look just like the trees in school art..
My favorite tree was between El Paso,Texas and Orgrande, New Mexico. Lovingly called the Orgrande National Forrest...just one lone tree beside the highway...I loved to see that tree on our trips to the cool mountains of southern New Mexico..My mother just had to get out to see some green...being from Oklahoma...Texas was very brown...and Cloudcroft was the closest place to see green and cool off...We were so very lucky....

So I guess my leafless trees are just a product of my childhood...but they have so much character...makes me happy...love and light...

I have been working on a custom shoji screen for a customer in California. The first photo is a sketch that is about 5 inches high by 9 wide..not the same dimensions as the finished one..but it was just to cement the idea that came to me. The second photo shows the first layer of dye...the back ground will be added later as I wanted complete control over the branches so I sprayed the entire piece with magic sizing and then applied the black. I will set the black wash the silk, re-stretch & apply the background. I want the background to be very soft and vibrant next to the hard edged black. Blessings Be...sandy

A dear friend, Bill Sharpling, created this pond for us..how delightful that the deer come for a bit of refreshment each morning. This one slipped in past the silly little dogs this morning. I had been taking photos of the sunrise and so was ready to record this moment..how lucky!! When her friends came scampering down the property line..all heck broke loose..deer bounding and dogs barking...just fun for all!! what a delightful way to begin a lovely morning. Rain is all around us...yesterday brought 0.12 inches of rain..how welcome!! Mornings feed my soul! We are blessed to live in such a great little house that affords us such an intimate friendship with the weather, shifting of the seasons and nature. Such an abundance of blessings....

Alana and Sue worked hard at the Silk - The Next Step workshop! Due to the fire danger in Ruidoso we did not steam the silk as I always steam outdoors. Today I am steaming the pieces they finished at the workshop. It will be like Christmas to see them once the steaming in done...I know the ladies will be excited to receive the finished pieces in the mail next week!
While the steaming process in on-going..I will work on my silk sculpture...woo hoo..just fun!

I have been working on this kimono for about two weeks now. I love the way it looked when I first put the dyes down...knew they would blend some as usual...I am pleased with the way the final silk turned out. I did a different Shibori fold on each of the sleeves and am delighted with the way the dyes ran to form the stripes on the sleeves. Soy wax was used to create the white abstract pattern..I really like the way the dye pools around the soy wax giving a darker outlined look...I simply like the easy flow of the piece and the bright summer colors...What Fun!

This piece is representative of the process I will be sharing at 'Silk - The Next Step' workshop. It is actually a very simple process but requires a great amount of Zen to complete. In technical terms layers of color are applied using soy wax as the only resist.

With the meditation panels the design focus is to lead individuals into the light of meditation. When I am working on a painting, if I find that I have drifted away while studying what to do next...the painting..perhaps...is finished. I originally have no concept of where a painting is going ...pick a color, mix and play with the dyes, Dancing the Dance and letting the Silk "tell" me what it wants next. Simplicity is my goal! Arriving there by mixing colors, applying, letting the colors blend and separate patiently waiting to see what the partnership of silk, dye and I will create.
One must be very patient, letting the Silk become what 'it' wants to be. Form, shape, shadow, color....the Zen of applying long fluid strokes of soy wax..becoming one with the process...'releasing' from the end result .... being 'present' in the moment of creation...right or wrong..good or bad..that is for later Right now..for me...it is this specific moment in my studio with my silk and my dyes. It is this wondrous creative journey, the 'Dance with the Silk', that keeps me playing in the studio each day.

Mobius Turban

Life has been very complicated this past spring. My mother will soon turn 95 and we have been spending more time with her. It is just "her age catching up" with her...as she is so fond of saying..."I am old darn it! "...but I keep going into the studio even if it is just for a few moments. I keep the ideas rumbling around in my head...color combinations whirl around giving me future inspiration. This photos shows a custom scarf I created for Amy. She is at war with her cancer and I hope the bright colors and good energy help her along the way. Only three more BIG treatments lay ahead of her...fighting the loss of energy is a huge issue in her life...
Life has a way of blind siding us at times. It is our journey to flex into the surprises and find a way to live that fill our hearts. I am so lucky that I have my art! I can go to that place in my head, where I create, any time I want..it is there waiting only for me to open of the door...How lucky is that? You simply never know who or what will walk in...and what lovely thing they have to teach you...
On that note...I have thought for many years about creating Turbans of Triumph...bright, colorful head wear for those who are facing the challenge of their bodies...I first gave scarves to a young teenager in Ruidoso with a very rare form of cancer many years ago.....but.... I did not know how to go about 'making" the turbans...It has been a creative thought that comes and goes...having tried this or that and never being satisfied with the results enough to promote the idea.
This past fall a wonderful silk painter Sandra Holzman shared her mobius scarves with me...of course she gave credit to the weavers who originally designed the pattern......but it was Sandra who took time to share the process with me. I have since explored ways to make them....sizes and fabrics and stitching...I have found customers really like the ease of the mobius, but Amy took it to another level when she used the mobius to create a turban. She claims it is the easiest to use...and her favorite mobius is actually the result of one of my experiments.. I used a combination silk /wool scarf with my faux shibori technique...she wraps and twists and done! Simple and easy for those days when engery or time simply does not allow for fancy scarf tying.
The scarf in the photo is not a mobius turban..but I hope to have time today to try one on the manikin and photograph it for you. I just think this is a wonderful new way to help those who are facing such challenges..as small thing we can do as artists..pass it on if you please.

Working with soy wax as my only resist is a fun challenge. Teaching it is even more fun! The possibilities are simply endless..one just needs patience and vision. And both of those are attributes one can learn and then expand...
Even when life throws us for a loop as is happening to so many artists today...one must just believe that life is part of the creative process. That each lesson life throws at us is an opportunity and an open door to expanding our "creative soul"....
There is the old saying...'One cannot see the forest for the trees'.....I am currently standing in the meadow...gazing at all the trees and at times it just seems that the forest goes on forever and one will never find the end...I realize I simply must pace myself and have faith that this lesson is very important..I will return to the studio when the time is right...( I return every day when possible..hoping that the day has arrived... and I know it is getting closer) ....in the meantime...I continue to think art and plan for art!!!...Vision is as important as action..if not more so....Art Vision...dream your art..plan for your art...do what you 'have' to do each day...always remembering to think, plan, visualize...ART.....then time will come...it will "be. art"... to all of you, my dear friends and those of you just passing through this blog...who are struggling just now....hang in there...this too shall pass.....blessings be...

I have spent the past week at the computer designing my artist directory ad for the coming year. So many choices ..each one an ad in and of itself...then editing...funny how a misspelling can go unnoticed by so many! LOL!....So many changes and then... just trying to figure out how to get the vision on paper...well the computer screen...obsessed is pretty close to the reality...wanting it to be as perfect as possible...so here it is...I could/should still make changes..but that would just add more changes and at some point one must move on....Soooo here's to "IT IS WHAT IT IS" spelling mistake in place...after all only the Gods are perfect...Blessings Be...Sandy

So.... I have just spent hours searching for a photo that is just not to be found. I know it is there.hiding with in the computer....but where it is hiding is anybodies guess! I need to get my ad done for the Sierra County Artists Directory..and I had one special photo to use ...then..after over two hours..I ran across this lovely sunrise..yes it is a sunrise...makes me want to say to heck with all the marketing and promotion stuff....and just go to the studio and paint...even if it means just rolling up the finished silk and putting it in a trunk!!!!! I know...I know..I will not do that.... but....right now it sounds pretty good!!!...just go paint red and yellow and shades in between :) :)

I did have a wonderful Rag Rug Festival in Las Cruces this past weekend...I love Las Cruces..they love color down there...and they are real patrons of the arts....I had quite a few return customers..and that is always so nice to see them and hear how they have enjoyed the silk they purchased last year..or the year before...makes all the work worthwhile...:) :)

Finished piece

In the previous blog,1-05-11 this piece was just started ... Now on exhibit at RioBravoFineArt in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico; here it is in it's finished form. Shown here it is free hanging in my living room. The sheer translucent quality of the silk along with the deep and vibrant colors along and the fact that silk can be viewed from either side, make it perfect for free-hanging. Think of a stained glass window..but one that floats upon the slightest breeze.
Using diluted dyes I was able to push the under-layer of dye to create a natural forming jagged hard edge for the leaf. Not knowing where a painting is going is the delight of this process. Letting go of control and simply dancing with the silks and dyes, creating as you go...a true partnership that lets the work be what 'it' wants to be...always remembering to be Zen....patiently waiting for silk and dye to work their magic before taking the next stroke. The results are works of art that..to me....reflect the inner energy of the artist and lead those who view the art into the light.

Good Morning...this is a soy wax resist piece I am currently working on. About three or four layers have been applied so far. The goal for today is to add several more light layers in the secondary framing creating the river willow foliage...yet keeping the center tunnel light. This piece measures 33 winde by 43 long...

This is a sample of the soy wax technique that will be the focus of the February "Silk-The Next Step" workshop. I have fallen in love with soy wax as a resist. It flows so beautifully and allows one to continue on to the next layer of dye almost immediately. I use soy wax almost exclusively in my work now...such a joy to work with!!

Here is the triangle loom with my shawl...I have discovered that I most certainly am not a weaver. It was a great idea..weave as I wait for the silk to dry...but ...each discipline needs their own time and focus...It has taken me over a year to finish this..although..the loom was at my friends house for most of that time...it came back to live with me for a time just so I could finish what I started...I did enjoy the challenge it presented and most certainly could get lost in the process...interruptions became very UnWelcome events...as I had to really focus on the weaving...Upon removing the shawl from the frame...the flaws became very visible..ahhhh....Thanks to Las Cruces Weaver Nancy Anderson for teaching me the process...and..if any of you are interested..she teaches all the time ...and is WONDERFUL... my shawl was the result of one lesson. I wish I could have gone back for more...this was the tip of the iceburg...But it is done..and now the loom will go back to live with my friend Claudia freeing up much needed studio space....
Is it not amazing how much a studio seems to collect..I spend so much 'free' time getting rid of the stuff that has found a way to the studio. At the beginning of each year I like to inventory blank silk and organize my coming events. Clear out the clutter and focus on creating. Not necessarily what I will create...but just that I will create...
Since I will be exhibiting my work next month at Rio Bravo Fine Art Gallery...little plug there...lol....I will hold off posting my work for a bit...you guys need a little surprise at the opening...It has been great fun getting ready for the exhibit.....most of all it will be so nice to see the work all hung at once in a proper setting.
I hope some of you will join me for the workshop at the gallery. It is part of the exhibit events and will be sooo much fun...we will tackle steaming as so many of your seem so afraid of that aspect of painting on silk. Think 'Christmas" lots of hard work..but the surprise of Christmas morning makes it worth every bit of the work!! That is steaming...you pray..you curse...swear you will find another way..but in the end...the vibrancy and joy of dyes that have been steamed are just sooooo worth it!!
Remember also....lessons here at my studio are available upon request...to get you up to speed for one of the major workshops or just to hone your skills...as always we have FUN... (just in case I have not said how much fun it is...lol....)

Silk Painting Workshop

On February 19-20 I will be instructing an intermediate silk painting workshop at Rio Bravo Fine Arts in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. We will focus on the using soy wax & pre-sist to create lovely complex layers. I will provide detailed "hands on" steaming instructions including building a steamer and steaming silk during the workshop.
I have spoken to so many silk artists who are afraid of steaming. It seems to be such a stumbling block and yet steaming is a natural progression of our art. There are nuances of color and a vibrancy that...in my opinion...simply cannot be achieved unless one steam sets the dyes.
In that frame of mind we will create silk pieces, build a steamer and actually roll and steam silk. There is no better way to conquer fear than to look it in the face and just do it...sounds cliche but it is also true.
So...if you have the basic skills of applying dyes to silk and feel you are ready to advance to your next level..I hope you will join me at Rio Bravo for "Silk - The Next Step".

I love this piece. it is a mobius with an attached broach. Just a cute twist to the norm. I am still doing all the stitching by hand..so hopefully I will get more precise as I do more. For now though...we are completing a remodeling project on our home...so for the next while I will be texturing walls and painting. It will be so wonderful to finish this room...it has been a long time coming..but it is just soooo pretty......Enjoy

Mobius Scarves

I have not written in quite a while..took a little time to disconnect from all the technology. At time the computer can seem almost addictive..and losing my precious camera just put me out of step.
Sooo, I have been busy in the studio playing with new ideas...it is so much fun to take work and then create something brand new. Kind of a special 'recycle' project...this lovely mobius scarf is a recycle project. I loved the scarf..but just tired of the same ole thing...so after talking with silk painter Sandra Holzman, at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, I put my hand to creating mobius scarves. Sandra is always so ready to share information and she did not disappoint as she not only told me how to make them but then graciously showed me how to wear them! They are simply the best...at least three ways to wear that are just soooo easy...stays in place all day.....and really shows off all the lovely nuances of color that we work so hard to attain. This one sold to a wonderful lady at the Rag-Rug Festival in Farmingtion.
Yes, since I went off line I took part in two festivals. One in Deming at the Luna Rossa Winery, great to see so many old friends at this festival....and to have several of my favorite pieces go off to new homes:_)
Then this past weekend a Rag-Rug and Design Collective at the Farmington Museum. It is always so wonderful to show my work and visit with all the fiber art lovers out there! Frieda Arth and her daughter Pam worked so hard to make the Farmington Rag-Rug Festival a success. The weather was simply glorious and the people of Farmington just as warm as the weather :)
Now..I am going to enjoy the holidays with my family. And focus on my solo show in February at the Rio Bravo Fine Art Gallery. I will be holding a workshop during the exhibit..most likely the third weekend....so if you are interested in a workshop?? email me what you want to learn ....I am thinking of a day with discharging on black, correcting mistakes with no flow, of course layering...always a challenge but so important to creating complex pieces...hummm.....workshop are always fun and challenging..so put in your request ...

I selected a silk crepe de chine for this piece. Using steam set dyes I created a unique silk painting with no resist. Direct painting allows the dyes to flow freely, requires an extremely light touch for the details. It is a challenge to achieve the finished art when one begins with just the essence of color. The dye and silk control where the painting will end up with artist simply dancing along.
One of the first paintings from the "Into the Light" series....JOURNEY...takes one from earthly ties to elevated consciousness. Maintaining a vision of simplicity ...Joy and sorrow...life is a journey... leading into the light.

Yes..I still have not purchased a new camera. It has amazed me how attached I am to that camera...sometimes I feel like I cannot function in the studio..taking photos as I work has been such a part of what I do ..that sometimes it is very difficult to go to the next step. Yeah..I use the phone camera..but not the same. It is sort of like breaking your favorite paint brush..(yep-done that one also) You simply cannot start..part of your body is gone...
However...I, again, borrowed Lisa's' camera and will do my best to photograph the waiting work:

All of these creations were inspired by patrons of my work...One always wonders if the creation will meet the expectations of the Muse...only time will tell...

This shawl is one of my favorites! Just finished and in time for Santa Fe...It is a chiffon jacquard strip so is extra light with a lovely jacquard leaf pattern . The colors range from pale yellow to a deep golden brown..with brilliant turquoise fading to multiple shades of garden green...just a delight to look at!! Makes all the work worth while...

A new piece for the Meditation series...this one was started here in the studio..then taken to the Hubbard as part of my recent workshop...returned to the studio for the finishing touches.....My daughter found these wonderful hand carved wooden brackets in Guam...such a great way to hang the panels...The tiny hand carved bone beads at the bottom corners were compliments of my friend Velvet...from Vermont. The beads give just the perfect amount of weight at the bottom edge to keep the panel hanging nicely. A team effort for sure! Makes creating art such fun to have a village helping...Blessings Be...

Sometimes when life gets 'hard' it is good to think back on where we came from and how far we have traveled. This is my studio when it was more of a storage garage..Yes, I painted in this mess and cramped space for quite a few years. I can remember days when I just sat there and cried wondering how I would ever make sense out of all the stuff. Well that was then and this is now; I am again sorting through 'stuff' wondering where to put things and what to give away and throw away.
The motivation is my mother thinking of moving in with us this winter....Or sooner...she had a confused weekend and we can both see that her days spent living alone are numbered...she is 94 after all and using her own words..."just getting old".."I am old darn it!"...
Of course I am not faced as overwhelming task as I was with the studio...It is just that now it is NOT to store..but to get rid of...I stored things last time and over the past few years ...most all has ruined one way or the other...Funny it never rains except when a box full of 'good' stuff is in open and where the rain will ruin the contents!! LOL what can one do but LOL...
Ah... cards given when children were small...plaster hand prints...our wedding guest list and left over invitations...grandmothers hand work..towels covered with pins from our Odyssey of the Mind days...just small trinkets of life passed by....even old art work...oil paintings that document the passage of time and the progress of skill..."ALL" mostly empty junk to others...it only has meaning to me.
Someone mentioned just taking pictures and then tossing...not sure what my method will be...but the challenge is there. I know the grandmother items will stay...somewhere...it is a connection to the past...And like the studio...this makes way for the journey....
We are stepping in to uncharted territory...Just knowing it will all work out as it should gives me courage...just 'do it' ! Everything will fall into place as it should...these photos remind me that what was old is now new...if the dream is there....it will come about...we just have to let go of control..and trust

experiencing just now..However, there is a draw back!! The layers of dye
take forever to dry.....if they really dry at all!
I have been working on several swing and cocoon jackets for next months Rag Rug Festival. Finally, I do not need to spend so many hours watering in the garden..but... now... spend time waiting for the silk to dry.
The high humidity did work it's magic on this swing jacket border...I was thinking of the lovely turquoise you find in Cerrillos...Hummm now I will need to purchase a 'rock' to match!

Today I had a lovely time visiting with Sue, Nancy and Elizabeth. They were returning from the Hand Weavers Convergence in Albuquerque. No fiber over-load for these ladies...just more enthusiasm for the creative spirit!

This is Lisa, a student of mine. She visited the studio this past week so we could photograph her lovely silk scarves. She has been very busy this past year and has created some wonderful silk art. We had great time grouping all the silk for 'group' photos and then placing each one on the dress form for individual photos.
I think keeping a photographic record of ones work is extremely important. It can help you remember how you achieved a certain look and just remind you of how far you have come! Photos also helps with the 'ugly' stage so many pieces go through. To have a record of those stages that are 'ugly' but necessary to achieve the final finished silk art, helps to keep one from jumping too soon to 'pretty'!
I certainly enjoy looking at past silk pieces. Sometimes I am amazed at how many pieces I have done and the sheer diversity of designs.
Remembering the beautiful work that students have created and how they have moved forward, some to selling/showing their work, but all achieving a great sense of personal accomplishment is just wonderful.

This is a fun piece I started at Capertons shop last month. There were three of us painting together..the same idea of a Gisha...I used soy wax to protect the white of her face and hair pieces. Gold water based resist and pure black dye. It was fun!

This is the kimono that my silk painting friend, Linda Caperton of Capitan, NM, gave to me. Originally a pale pink it has gone through several stages of dyes. As Linda would say "it kicked my butt"!! Butt! What fun to paint. Such a challenge! and Oh the stages it went through to get here. I will steam this in the next few days and when it is all finished I will post a series of photos to show the stages.
If you are ever in the Ruidoso, New Mexico area make sure you take a side trip to Capitan, the home of Smokey the Bear. Capertons shop, Silk and Pearls, is across the street from the Smokey the Bear Museum...A must stop on your adventures in the Lincoln National Forrest!!

The scarves pictured above are a dream to create. There is no limit to what you can achieve if you just experiment with color and design. It is one of the most fascinating areas of creativity in silk painting. Since you are only limited by the size of the scarf and your love of color, you can just 'go for it'!
In the July workshop at the Hubbard, you will get the opportunity to play with color and different resist techniques while creating your very own 'original' silk scarves. Although I have searched for other ways to describe this process..the only one that truly expresses the event is FUN. Hubbard Museum Simply Silk Workshop

JULY IS ALMOST HERE! The Hubbard Museum of the American West is hosting my second Simply Silk Workshop. Last year I had so much fun instructing "future silkies" in the 'art of painting on silk'. Such a fabulous group of ladies open to playing with color and experimenting with different techniques. Working with dye on silk is a joyous pastime!
I think the best thing about working with dye on silk is that anyone can create a beautiful silk scarf or wall hanging, even if they have NEVER , NEVER picked up a paint brush or drawing pencil. When someone tell me they want to be creative but, they say, "I can't draw a straight line" they are perfect, perfect for this workshop!!
We approach working with dye on silk with a 'No Fear Attitude'. There is no 'ruined' piece of silk...just a silk that is not finished yet! Just imagine, two days playing with your favorite colors...watching them shift and blend and do the most marvelous things...!! I can not tell you how many times I have stood in my studio, side by side with a student and just giggled over the wonderful movement taking place on the silk! So when was the last time you just giggled over art?? It is nice to have a space of time where the outside world just fades away.
In my Simply Silk Workshop as the ease of learning this art opens doors for the beginner it also takes the more advanced artists to new heights. Stepping back to the basics opens doors to layering which helps us to create complex works of art. And, honestly, sometimes a well seasoned artist just needs the opportunity to play again...and playing with color and multiple resists is so much fun!

Good to be Back Home

I had a great time demonstrating how to paint on silk at the Hubbard Museum of the American West, Spin, Weave or Dye event. So many nice people...great kids having fun exploring how to spin and dye and weave. We all made felted soap and just how much fun is it to dye using Kool Aid..??.way tooo much!
Then it is off to Lyn's and her five, yes 5 pooches for the night and on Sunday.... off to see Linda Caperton, of Capitans most famous shop...SILK & PEARLS....we spent the day dyeing real Japanese Kimonos. We had such fun...even saw her kimono take flight in a whirlwind...ahhh ...the southwest always has a surprise for you!
It is good to be back home again. I spent yesterday catching up on everything and today was "show respect for all the things we have purchased"..aka...cleaing house.
But, Now it is time to check out the studio. I want to finish the piece I started at the Hubbard and continue with the 'real' kimono...so it should be a fun afternoon. Sorry no current photos for now. I borrowed a camera for the trip...but I do not have a cord to download the photos to the computer...ahhhh....such a little thing..and..yet... so very important...

Finally back from the framers...I do love this one....it was fun to paint and meditative to look at. I steamed yesterday and have so many new lovely pieces. I had begun to feel like I was not accomplishing anything...but rolled for the steamer were multiple pieces...just like Christmas to unroll them and be surprised...today they rest and then tomorrow I will wash and finish....for now I am working on test piece that will...hopefully become a large painting for an office commission. I started simple with red, black and gold and will now try again with more color in the colors...to add more movement and eye interest. I like the simple design..more abstract...and contemporary...a nice challenge...
Fixed the problem with the website...funny pay pal stuff...that GOD for Shallana my web guru..she makes it all happen in a flash! How blessed I am to have her...THANK YOU CJ...funny she was a gift from my son....each of us helping to lift the other up to new heights...isn't life wonderful! blessings be....me

"Into the Light" series

I finished six pieces this week. What a great time in the studio. This one is my husbands favorite. When steamed, it is shown still on the stretcher bars, it will become an 18x24 framed art piece.
The wind is due to blow today and I must take my mother to market...so the steaming will have to wait for a few days....ahhh...but...one must be Zen about these things. Silk teaches patience if nothing else.
I was thinking...the last few days...as many time before...of creating more gallery space. The last few days...the thinking was spurred by the notion that I would have three more paintings to add to the studio when the steaming is done....where to put them?? Soooo...Joe and I looked at some portable buildings that would make a great "tiny" gallery...well, OK...not so tiny but you get the drift...But ...where to put it on the property so that it would look nice and be convenient....and not cost a fortune in land preparation?? Several places would 'work'... but nothing perfect and not without a tremendous cost! OH! POOH!...so for now they will be rolled and kept in waiting...only to frame when they are ready to go to a new home...very cost and space effective.... if not perfect...The bright side is when I unroll the art after a long time...it is like Christmas Morning to see the work again! Such colorful surprises!! I forgot I even had certain pieces!! Always a silver lining if one is willing to look!

saying goodbye

The Gila charmeuse kimono has been one of my favorites. I spent quite a long time creating the surface design on it. Layers of dye and resists combined with batik wax. The act of creating it was such a wonderful learning experience....However, now it is time to say goodbye....yep...it has sold and is going to be a gift for someone well loved.
There are some pieces I would love to keep...simply because they remind me of that time in the studio creating...the feeling of joy...
the excitement and fun ....the waiting to see just what the piece will ultimately look like.
Photos are good but it is not the same thing as holding the silk in your hand and really looking at the nuances of color and design. I have a friend who comes in to the studio and studies a scarf or painting and always asks me "how" did I do this or that...what created this or that effect...It makes me stop and ponder the design and colors and truly think about the process...many times I just do not know...it is a magic that happens..the dance between silk, dye and artist....
Saying goodbye is a sad time and yet I have a feeling of completion and mostly contentment...the circle is complete...When the new owner puts this on....perhaps there will be a transference energy that I felt when creating it...hummmm

For the last few days I have been working on Opera Shawls. These are not yet dry and will be steamed next week. I enjoy working with the chiffon jacquard fabric as it is a real challenge and so fun to watch the colors separate as they dry. I have just started to work on black ones. I normally do not like working with black but it is a new challenge to see how I can get it to separate as it drys. One is lovely with a deep black border that separates to blue...and has a pure white center. Then I worked with one...just painting it a pure black...will be interesting to see how they look when the whole process is finished.
I know that sometimes I get to caught up in the "process"...but it is the process that is so fascinating. Anyone can apply dye and get a result...and there are certainly easier methods to use. I guess for me it is the 'spirit' of exploring the art of painting on silk...it is not actually the end product that one sells...for me the act of selling is simply a way to continue what I do....it is not upper-most in my mind when I create. I simply love the dance that the silk, dyes and I create....an end product that is enchanting is just a plus of the whole process...
So next week we will see what we see and then go from there...till then...blessings be

ONE THE POND series this one is now rolled and waiting to be steamed...it will be interesting to see if I got enough color in the lightest areas...it measures a full 36x36 and I like the edges so will have to think about how ti frame this one...always a new challenge!!

I have been busy working in the gardens the past few weeks. We are so excited to see our white wisteria blooming...and the wind has been kind enough to spare the blooms. Today is the second day that the blooms are opening. I took this photo at sunrise this morning. Tomorrow we may see the blooms completely open....the gardens are just beautiful . Nice to see the fruits of our labors...what would I do with out hubby dear to help?!

Of all the photos I took of my daughter during my stay in Guam...this one is my favorite. I took it from Two Lovers Point over looking Tumon Bay. Don't cha just love her Kentucky Derby hat?? Actually they are great hats and really work to keep the sun at bay....
I am just now posting the Guam photos as I lost my camera ..some blessed tourist found it and turned it in at the Guam Reef Hotel where I stayed. They called my daughter ...how delighted I was to have it safe and sound...The post office 'here' kept it's arrival secret for 2 weeks.....but we will just not go there in our minds...it is with me now and I have missed it! I did not know I was so attached to my camera...but it is a very important part of what I do. Plus I got to experience my vacation all over again!!

This is a photo of my lower garden. The shade is created by a white wisteria. When sitting on 'Ritas' deck, at the back of the house, you look down on the top of the arbor. The bed surrounding the wisteria contains Vinca vine which has pretty purple blooms and bright yellow Four O'clocks. The birds just love this arbor..and this spring they have been plentiful and very entertaining. The wisteria will bloom this year...the first time since we planted it. I did not know that a wisteria can take up to 10 years before blooming! This year it will be magnificent! Well over a hundred blooms are making their journey ....each day I sit and marvel..waiting for the first to reach full potential......anticipation is probably the best as the full blooms will be beautiful but brief! Hummmm...I wonder what the fragrance will be like...And I pray the wind will be gone....as I have seen my other wisterias ruined by untimely wind.
Since we live in the desert..our soil can be challenging...think of a child's sand box then add rocks! LOL yes...challengeing...So for the last month my husband, Joe, and I have been working in the gardens...yes, plural...as we have little pocket gardens....Oasis's of green among the rocks and sand...Each garden has a name so hubby dear will know what I am talking about...well most of the time he knows...The gardens do take a lot of care and that means time. Especially during the springtime! Sooo, working on art has moved to the back burner as we trim and clean, compost and water the gardens...when the 'wind permits'...
Now it is off to get my mother for our weekly market adventure...I hope you will visit with me this Saturday, April 10, at the Percha Creek Traders Art Opening; I am one of three women exhibiting art for the month of April. I suppose you could say that I am not taking time off from art ...but rather enjoying the fruits of my winter labor...just as this summer I will enjoy the fruits of my spring garden effort...and the wheel will turn and the summer will find me working in the studio...perhaps a white wisteria will find it's way to my fall line. Only September will know for sure...blessings be...

Ahh... Spring is here. Yesterday a group of us took the day off and ventured up the Monticello Box Canyon. The lovely CLEAR photo was taken a few years ago in the autumn....sooo....picture if you can this lovely canyon filled with dust...the wind was roaring down the canyon ripping up the waters of the Can~nada Alamosa....spraying the vehicles with mist then capturing the dust, making mud balls out of all of us. (Otherwise the trip up the canyon was fun!!...always delightful to 'see' the canyon through the eyes of first timers!)
Once out of the canyon and on the 'highway' to Dusty, a look back showed the dusty wind gust had played itself out and the canyon looked clear again. Just our luck to have the perfect storm timing!! However, skipping a dusty hike to the hot springs gave us time to venture on to Chloride Canyon and then dinner in Cuchillo....at the Cuchillo Cafe...a must stop if you are ever in the area!
Now off to the studio to see what creative works might come of yesterdays adventures....blessings be...sandy

We survived the tsunami!! This photo was taken Sunday afternoon...late in the day. We finished the workshop and headed over to the east side of the island to the Ifit woodcarvers studio. I am told that it is pretty unusual to have giant waves...and this day they were really nice. Many of the locals stopped along side the road just as we did to photograph the beauty. The gift of the tsunami....Funny though we really did not know much of this until the next day at breakfast when we picked up a local newspaper. Seems the only tsunami warning system is on or near the Island of Rota...many miles away.....My husband called me around 1:30 in the morning Sunday...silly me...I told him not to worry as no sirens were going off and the hotel had not called the room...( I was on the other side of the island from where the tsunami would/could hit)....sometimes I live in a polly-anna world...not such a bad thing I suppose....I will post more photos later.....still trying to catch up on all the things that waited patiently for me to return...IT WAS A GREAT TRIP AND I LOVE GUAM!!

the desert is still very dry. We hope for some rain today or tomorrow...Sunday or Monday..this hike was Friday...

Photo #2 shows the new golf resort behind the pretty blue of Mims Lake.
The distant mountains in photo #2 are the San Mateo...locally referred to it as Springtime....a lovely place...cool with pine trees...( I can see the San Mateos from my kitchen window and have often watched the storms gather there and then move on North to Socorro.)

The last photo of this group, #4, shows the other side of the mountain from the spring....we thought we could hike up and over the hill then return to the car down that distant arroyo (looks like a road near the middle of the photo) ...but as with so many plans...it was only good in theory..(my brothers favorite saying..."in theory")....as the hillside was to steep to hike down..and I was not in the mood to get cactus thorns in my behind...sliding down..so Robin and I took the 'easy' way out...( I use the term lightly) retraced our steps back to the stream and returned the way we arrived.
We only hiked about 3 hours at most..but it a simply perfect day...out here.... when the day is perfect it is best to stop everything and take advantage.....as the weather changes very quickly especially in spring. The next day the wind was blowing and winter as letting us know that he is not done with us yet!!...
I am off to Guam tomorrow...so excited to meet Ramona...what fun we will have exploring the art of painting on silk together...it is always so much fun to introduce someone to this media...then days with my daughter swimming and my most looked forward to event..the Saturday night hash run..and yes I have my t-shirt!!

February and the weather is summer like ! So....everything else can wait...off to take a long awaited hike to my favorite place. Long-time friend Robbin is in town, so off we go.
Robbin first introduced me to this area several years ago. I actually put silk ruanas in my backpack...hiked to the lagoons, took out the silk, donned it over jeans and boots....ah ... my first photo shoot!
Well the beautiful seasonal lagoons are gone but the spring fed stream still freshens the earth. These four photos are the beginning of the hike and a small lagoon. From the lagoon we head up the hills for the next set of photos. Unfortunately out of oder..sorry..I am still getting the hang of this ....so here at the end is the beginning...

This is a piece I have been working on for the last few days. It is 'resting ' now for 72 hous to allow the dyes completely absorb into the silk fibers. I used presist and soy wax for the design with layers and layers of color. The final design will not be complete until the steaming is done and the presist/soy wax are washed out. For now the charmeuse has a lovely sheen with nuances of color that remind me of an abalone sea shell.

Meet Jane...our newest convert to silk painting. We spent a day last week...just having a great time with dyes and silk. So much laughter!!.... as we simply watched the silk do it's thing. Jane came here with no "real" art background. (don't you just love that term??) Just a love of color...like me...this art is perfect for anyone who just wants to explore color and let go to have fun with color. You can work for ten minutes or ten hours...perfect for a busy person...but...even ten minutes of pure happiness working with silk is a boost for your energy....
I hope you will join me sometime in the studio...laughter is good energy for the soul...and silk provides plenty of good energy!
soo...since the workshop with Jane,.... I have been working on a red silk charmeuse dressing gown...will post photos tomorrow...it is very difficult to photograph red!! Photos do not do silk justice as you loose the nuances of color that are just so enchanting....that said..the robe is simply vibrant...layers of color from pale yellow to peach to deep scarlet...till then...blessings be...

We had a wonderful day. The weather was just perfect...warm and just a soft breeze...55 ladies in about 55 minutes...so much to tell and show and tell and soooo little time. check out the additional photos (can't put them all on at once :(...but I posted several times:) )
Thank you Emily and Sheryl for bringing the Fabulous Fiber ladies & gents to visit. This was my first bus tour and I have waited for 3,..yes, three!! years for you ladies to arrive!! We has a great time visiting with everyone. Thanks to my wonderful helpers...husband Joe....brother Albert..good friends Eddie and Claudia..she took the photos... and friend Jane..a new silk painter convert..
Hope the quilters & friends will stop and visit again some time! As I continue my 'exploration of painting on silk', I am now playing with design. Taking the mundane and using techniques to play with cause and effect. I wanted the watery effect of summer rain..... plus the shimmer of heat as it quickly dissipates the moisture to the air. I was thinking of the desert mirages we see in summer on the horizon...just ahead but never to be reached.
I used layers of dye.. some thickened.... but most painted directly to the silk with out the use of resist. I enjoy the challenge of applying wet dye to wet dye and dancing with the results!
This work measures 30x30 with a 1.5 gallery wrap edge. I will have it framed in a shadow box to protect the edges...well...maybe...I do like the infinity edge this type of galley wrap gives to a work of art.
The silk I used is a jacquard fleck. It adds it's own shimmer to the piece and gives the work a very subtle complexity that I do love. I resisted the use of embellishments on this piece. Instead, leaving it just a very simple, peaceful work of art.
As with so many of my works, it is inspired by my surroundings. The desert can be a very barren place to those uninitiated. When the rains come the desert quickly becomes an explosion of color. Some of the most beautiful blooms last a short 24 hours. So when it rains here...everything comes to a halt...as the rain may only last 5 or 10 minutes..but one might not see it again for months! The center image of an Ocotillo in bloom was inspired by my old neighbor and friend Fred Comstock. He passed over several years ago..but he did love his Ocotillo...so Fred..this one is for you....love Sandy

i am finally getting over the flu. today is actually the first day i 'think' i feel normal...at least interested in doing something...the photo is of the 1st full moon in december.....remember there will be a full moon on december 31st..yep...new years eve...the final .....
'blue moon' of the year! wish i felt like going to the studio but the energy is just not there. still have all the silk in boxes for the santa fe show that i missed due to this lousy flu! think i will just sit in the sunshine and re-charge my batteries....everything else can wait...thank goodness....be safe out there....winter blessings to you and yours....

We are working hard on the details for the spring Silk Art Adventure. I am so excited that I am already working on the SPRING COLLECTION. Yes, tropical colors are certainly influencing me!
Life has been very challenging this past month. My husband had cataract surgery in both eyes last month. Whew! All the trips down south to El Paso...you know..the before, during and after..multiplied by two. Now we must start again on fixing the retinas...one at a time. Keep him in your prayers...So far the vision is really good!
But, in all the hustle and bustle of doctors and such...I missed several events here locally. I knew I was getting over-loaded..but what can one do??!! And in the midst of it all my mom got the flu! She is fine now..but at 93 it does hit a bit harder.
ANYWAY...for those of you taking the time to read this. I do hope you like the piece in the photo to the left. I painted it in November..before all the action! It is 45 inches wide and 105 long...whisper soft silk habotai and sheer 5mm..my favorite of the moment! It is one of four I have managed to create. The one I sent to London is still stuck in customs...very, very disappointing...for everyone involved...but, mostly for Eva who ordered it for a special dance performance. Keep your fingers crossed that it gets to her soon!!
Alise purchased the #3 water lilies on a 36x36 jacquard fleck...and I have the other ready to be framed. It drives me crazy to be so busy with life that the studio must wait. Books were updated today and Christmas cards made ready to mail...well, OK...some of them. Looks like it may snow again tonight...can't remember when we had such early snow and twice in December already!! Global warming for sure! Makes GUAM look very inviting! Think sand, sea and silk...it will be here before we know it. Shannon is on board already..so get your name on the list. It will be great fun!...till then...

PAINTING IN PARADISE....FEBRUARY 2010! We are a go for our SIMPLY SILK WORKSHOP. As I stated in my earlier blog...I want to travel and yet enjoy my love of painting on silk...or is it I want to paint on silk and enjoy travel. So we are developing a lovely trip to the most beautiful island of GUAM for a week of SEA, SAND AND SILK! OH! (Wish I had put that in the ad... marketing is such a challenge.)
At this point we are looking at arriving in Guam on the 24th and taking that day off. Friday will be a tour of the islands secret places...I have the inside scoop on that since my daughter lives there and is a great outdoors woman. ...We will view hidden waterfalls and spring fed caves along with some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere...all without the crowds of more well know places. Saturday and Sunday will be our class time...focus will be on learning to "DANCE WITH THE SILK"। Allowing the dyes to do what they do best which is MOVE!। If you are ready to move beyond the lines and free yourself up...this is it! The next day will find us "Plein Aire" painting What could be more fun than that?!

Got the veil finished and mail on Monday to make it to London by Friday... guaranteed ...guess what...it is Sunday and Eva says it has not arrived yet....so disappointing....for us both... so now...will she like it and will it ever get there...lost?? ahhhh

Trunk Shows require lots of support and GOOD friends to help out. The weather was windy so everything had to be moved in doors to my tiny studio. We managed and had a wonderful time visiting with friends.
Every artist needs their patrons who support their work. But,...!!! friends who help us with shows, exhibits and unlimited support of every kind are just the BEST... Thanks to Lisa and Claudia...you guys ROCK!
The person you do not see in the photos is Joe...hubby dear..held down the fort keeping dogs at bay and cooking my mom the best enchiladas in the world for her supper! How lucky am I!!

SILK ART ADVENTURES IN GUAM
Yes! Guam...Guam is the paradise destination for many vacationers in the Orient. Undiscovered by many Americans...it's paradise as we imagine it.....
I LOVE THE OUTDOORS! For some time now I have looked at traveling and silk painting in combination. However, what I usually came upon was traveling and then being stuck inside a studio painting...NOT what I want...traveling to distant lands is expensive, to say the least...I do want to paint and meet other silk painters..share ideas and techniques..but I also want to see the land itself! To get outside and really see the community.
SOOO...I am putting together my own trip. This will be the inaugural trip for "Silk Art Adventures". Very casual..so if you are expecting 5**** this may not be for you. BUT!...if you are like me...want to hike, swim in the ocean...visit spring fed caves and lost waterfalls...don't mind hiking in an out..a few bugs...sand in your shoes...then lets talk.
I have secured a fabulous guide who really knows Guam. We can visit many places that a tourist just never sees. Lets take along our silk for quick sketches or watercolors or charcoal.....JUST ..be inspired by the paradise around us.
Vacation / Relaxation...and ART...what a perfect combination!!
Early morning forays to get inspired and quick sketch then mid-day to 'serious' paint...out again for tropical sunsets....or.....perhaps a dinner cruise? peaceful kayaking? ..walking the beach....seeing the nightlife
Many options will be available
I will post more information as we finalize the details....Yeah..not much time to prepare...but, ask for it for Christmas and Valentines Day gifts...I am tooo old to plan..
lets be spontaneous...and JUST DO IT!

I know I have not posted something new for a while..but I have been hard at work. Here is a new scarf painted on Charmeuse...it is a layered effect...such fun to paint...this one is ready to be steamed. Next week I will post the finished scarf.
I have been hard at 'play' creating some new pieces for a special Holiday exhibit at the Santa Fe Community Gallery. Those pieces are all most finished and then I will start on a Dancers Veil for Eva in London...I have already painted a test piece and I love the results...not finished yet...but I will post photos of it next week...So, all in all an exciting time here at Grasshopper Silk Studio. OH! Plus, I will be showing in Santa Fe for a one day show...date to be announced shortly..so if you are planning on Visiting Santa Fe or Elephant Butte...be sure to stop in and see what is 'FRESH FROM THE STUDIO"! Shown here is the Great Blue Heron shawl before steaming. It started out as a wall hanging but evolved into a lovely shawl with heavy lace on each end. The design works so that you can use it as a wall hanging or wear it as a shawl...hence the term wall-able or wear-able...
At the opening in Madrid another artist asked me where I got my inspiration...a hesitated and then responded .."where do any of us get our inspiration"...while circling my hand over my head...because all inspiration comes from the spirits. We do not create art alone...our best art is created when we simply allow ourselves to let go...to just 'do it'...Probably the most challenging part of being an artist is that moment in time when you turn off your brain and just paint...not thinking!.... just being in the Zen of the moment...the reward is a piece of art that transcends the artist. It may not be a 'great' piece of art as the outside world perceives it...but for the artist that feeling remains...the oneness with something greater than self.... you can actually tap back into that feeling when the work is viewed.
On a more earthly plain....this piece was inspired by a day of kayaking on the lake. Not far from my home is Jet Boat Cove.(to us old-timers)..or more recently named Hot Springs Cove. When the lake is full this cove is quite large. This year the water rose into the cove submerging the brush that had grown up over the past few dry years.
As the water was receding this past August, the greying branches, of the once partially submerged, salt cedar were exposed. Against this back drop of grey the Heron was posed to catch his dinner. My kayak did not disturb him as I floated on the calm water. And what was so amazing, besides his focus and speed at catching fish...was the way he would simply disappear into the back ground of grey branches. I was floating there staring at him and he would disappear and re=appear seemingly at will...though by no effort on his part.....Simply mother nature in her glory...
So this piece of silk was born. Carrying far more meaning to me that to the casual viewer...it is not the mastering of a technique or a sublime piece of art...Just the essence of a moment of pure bliss on the lake...And if you are a believer in the spirit of art..when this silk is wrapped around your shoulders, or hung upon the wall ....that sense of bliss should follow...till then....
